Teólogo y filósofo inglés. Educado como puritano que más tarde adoptó concepciones inconformistas, entre ellas que el gobierno de la iglesia y la práctica religiosa deben ser individuales y no autoritarios. Fue el líder de los platonistas de Cambridge. En ética, su libro más destacado es A Treatise Concerning Eternal and Immutable Morality [Tratado concerniente a la moralidad eterna e inmutable] (1731), que apuntaba sus dardos contra el calvinismo puritano, la teología de René Descartes y el intento de Tomas Hobbes de reducir la moralidad a la obediencia de la autoridad civil. Insistió en que el bien o mal natural eran inherentes a sucesos o actos, en contraste con la noción calvinista y cartesiana de ley divina."Las cosas son lo que son, escribió, "no por Voluntad, sino por Naturaleza.
